Western Wildcats

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Another sign-post indicating our rise as a club of the future is yesterday’s announcement of a record 24 FHC children being selected to represent the western metropolitan region (Western Wildcats) in this year’s State Championships in July. This is fantastic news for FHC and a real endorsement of our coaching programs and Club policies. Our recent history with Western Wildcats representation reads as follows: 2004-10, 2005-15, 2006-17, and 2007-24.

Selected were:
U15: Danica Breen, Stephanie Buttigieg, Harriet Negus, Danielle Pereira, Georgina Wheeler, Tom Doer-Tolhurst and Scott Shaw.
U14: Rachel Browne, Lauren Hopkins, Bronte Kerley, Alexandra Leeder, Lexie White, Jake Bailey and Alun Williams.
U13: Sarah Breen, Sheridan Corless, Ellen Druce, Nicola Hancock, Gabrielle Lewis, Ally Sheehan, Tayla Williams, Weston Howell, Patrick Meaney and Morgan Stephens.

We have particularly dominated girls selections with FHC having 17 girls selected, with the next highest being Altona and Essendon Ladies with 8 each.

Congratulations to Heather Shaw and Julie Stephens for their Wildcats related work for FHC, and the senior players that volunteered to be selectors over the last few weeks. Hernie Isorena and Phylicia (Flea) Veitch are coaching Wildcats teams also. Our major thanks and congratulations should again go to our fantastic coaches though, who are creating a fantastic future for the FHC. These results show the quality of your commitment and input!

Juniors Playing Seniors

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

One of the great disappointments about junior sport is the drop-out rate that hits in the middle teen years in particular, effectively stopping children moving on with their sport into senior competition. This means that healthy activities that can become life-long passions are lost.

FHC are really working diligently on this complex issue, and I’m thrilled to report that last weekend approximately 50 FHC juniors enjoyed a senior game in the men’s or ladies division! This is an outstanding achievement for the Club, and my thanks go to the men’s and women’s administration and their selectors, as well as to junior coaches and parents that are supporting this initiative. As the season progresses I’m sure that we will see rapid progress in the kids that are taking advantage of the opportunity to get an extra game in each week. If you’re playing U17/15 and would like to get involved, let Brendan know and we’ll get you involved quick smart!

Many years of hard work has gone into getting these kids to the standards that they are achieving, so if you’re a current or recent FHC junior coach puff your chest out because your efforts are going to see FHC senior teams achieve an enormous amount of success in coming years. Particular congrats to the coaches that have taught/are teaching Rhyce/Andrew Shand, Hadyn Shaw, Ryan Hopkins, Ruth Torr, Karen Huddle, Bronte Kerley, Lexie White and Sarah Breen who have all tasted State League hockey this year, whilst still juniors. Well done players as well!

Parents Only Social Night

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

The junior section’s Parents (and friends) Only Social Night (child free) is locked in for Sat 23 June which is less than 6 weeks away! Not sure what the format is as yet (it’s been a brilliant Trivia Night in recent years) but whatever the format is, you must be there!
We want to get at least a table full from all of our 18 teams, so circle the date on your calendar now and support our fund-raising and socializing endeavors. If you can arrange an item for that night’s auctions it would be very much appreciated also.
Contacts are Mark White (0416095761) and Barry Allan (0419547415).

Attention All Team Managers

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

We are having a meeting Tuesday night (May 22nd at 6.00 pm sharp) of all team managers to discuss team administration this season so far (it’s been terrific!) as well as some specialist items such as the injury prevention trial that we are about to run, and how to use the electronic scoreboard. Coordinators are welcome to attend also, but at the least, please ensure that your team managers are aware of the meeting.

First Aid Training

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Stay tuned for an announcement soon regarding a First Aid Night that we will be conducting for interested participants. Hopefully we can ensure that all FHC teams have people at their games that are proficient in band-aid application through to more serious skills. More news when the date is set.
