Presidents Report

Get Well Alby Speed
Our stalwart grounds manager (Alby Speed) is now recovering from a bout with the surgeons after not feeling well while working down the ground two weeks ago, Alby took himself home and then went to Hospital were he had major surgery to solve some Heart issues. Word is he is sitting back enjoying the Olympics with no interruptions and progressing well.

Good luck for the last 3 games
On a happier note with 3 rounds to go the club have numerous Junior and Senior teams sitting in top four and getting ready to contest finals, best of luck to all those players, Coaches and Managers.

Ground Update
While I was in Darwin at the veterans national championships James Merlino the sports minister visited our complex to announce the $275,000 State Government grant for the upgrading of both fields and the hit up area at the rear of the clubrooms, this with the grant from Footscray Council and our own input of money gives us the funds to progress with the upgrades. From memory this has been in the pipe line for at least 6 years and has taken a lot of hard work by the grounds committee to finally get the funding together to start work. At present we are at the tendering stage in the process and hope to have the sand ground and the hit up area finished around Christmas, with the wet turf replaced at the end of next season.

Hosting Vets Championships 2009
The timing of the wet field upgrade will be dependent on discussions I am having with Hockey Australia, Hockey Victoria and the Australian Veterans Hockey Council. As the Victorian State Veterans delegate and also the Australian Veterans Championship Co-ordinator it is my responsibility to organise next years championships in Melbourne. This entails teams from all states and territories and from 55 to 70 teams competing over a 2 week period with Footscray’s complex being in the running to be the main host to this huge event. Eight games on each field per day will need to be played to enable the running of this championship with overflow games being played at the SNHC.

Thanks
To the parents and players who have helped with the country week long week – end, multiply that event by 3 times the people and take it over 13 days, it is the largest national hockey event held in Australia. Please keep this in mind when we call for volunteers, date at present is still being negotiated but will be at the end of the 2009 season.

Good luck to all teams participating in finals. Yours in Hockey

Mens Report

SL2 – Some recent good form has given the 1sts a good oppurtunity to avoid relegation, but will more than likely have have to win 2 out of their last 3 games and rely on other results to avoid relegation. Too many draws and narrow defeats may come back to haunt them.

PC – Consecutive defeats has seen the 2nds drop from top spot to 3rd on the ladder. With the top four very tight they will have to re-capture their winning form to guarantee a top 2 spot and double chance.

PD – Have battled hard all year round and with a little luck could have won a few games. The extra year in PD will have given the guys a lot of experience and the perfect platform to build on next year.

M2W – Are narrowly out of the relegation zone and currently with 17 points are sitting 8th on the ladder. They would be stiff to be relegated, but could also push for a finals spot if they won their remaining 3 games and results went their way.

M3W – Are currently sitting in 8th spot, 4 points clear of relegation. Will need at least 1 more win to make sure of safety.

M3N – With 3 games to go are sitting in 6th spot but only 2 points out of the top four and their destiny in their own hands. Good luck boys and hope to see you in September!!!!
Only 3 weeks to go guys and every team has something to play for, so keep up the training and hopefully we can keep all grades and also be cheering on some guys in the finals.

Ladies Report

State League 2 have had a tough and challenging season. Currently sitting in ninth spot on the ladder with 2 win,2 draw & 10 Loss’s. However they have continued to persevere through this second half of the season. With 4 more games left to play out the season, as they have a double header on rnd 18 with a game on Saturday and Sunday, due to the rescheduled game against Bendigo. The girls will be finding it a tough end to the season playing all the teams who are in the top half of the ladder.

PB 7th after 4 win 5 loss’s and 6 draws, the ladder is extremely close in this competition. A win will see them back in finals contention.

M1N 2nd after some exciting wins, this team has really come together. A very close competition for the bottom half of the ladder. They are one point behind Hawthorn who are on top of the ladder. Well done Keep up the good work !!!

M2N 4th after 7 wins 6 draw and 2 loss. Playing consistently well. Keep up the good work girls!

M3N 2nd on the ladder , 2 points behind the team on top. Well done keep up the good work!!!

M4 Blue – 3rd after 8 wins 5 loss’s and 1 draw this team has been playing consistently well. Well done girls!!! Keep it up!!

M4 Red – 6th with 5 wins 3 loss’s and 6 draws . Great work girls. Keep it up
These two teams continue to have sufficient players (especially when players give me enough notice to replace them!) and their success is due to the consistent squads on players and the great coaching assistance they are receiving! Well done girls keep up the Fantastic Work!!!

As an alternative to specialist hockey skills, this Summer’s ‘Super Summer Skills’ program will be focusing on running technique. Our leading running coach Sonia Kiernan will be training the squads for the five Sunday mornings through November, and, at this stage, the morning program would run:

Vale Andrew Bettiol

Friday, August 15th, 2008

It is with deepest sympathies that FHC learnt of Andrew Bettiol’s passing two weeks ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with Fiona and their 4 daughters during this difficult time. Betts was a most loyal and respected club member, volunteer, coach and player. He had joined in 1977, over 30 year member and played 582 games. In 2007 the club was thrilled that he put his hand up to take on the enormous job of Men’s Administrator. His biggest legacy includes re-igniting the spark in the lower grade men’s teams by establishing training and support to juniors and the triumphant 4 – 4 draw in the rd 18 SL2 2007 game in Albury to save relegation. The attendance from FHC members at the funeral was tremendous and showed how much he touched us all. Betts’ smile and good humour will be sincerely missed by all members. Thank you to those FHC members who have supported the Bettiol Family during this difficult time.
