Werribee Pre-Season Pennant Tournament

Werribee’s annual pre-season pennant tournament was run on the 16th-17th of March, hosting 6 teams of high quality, including Footscray’s Pennant A squad. Throughout the weekend, the young squad of 16 players gave it their all and came out with some great results. At the end of the round robin section one draw, a loss and three excellent wins had resulted.   The decision as to who would play in the grand final against Geelong came down to goal difference between Footscray and the Werribee Black team. An outstanding 11-1 win against PEGS in Footscray’s final game however boosted them into second position. Footscray was now set to verse Geelong. On the Saturday, Footscray had held to a 1-1 draw for most of the game, before the more experienced side scored 2 late goals, defeating Footscray 3-1. Due to prior commitments and unavailabilities, two Footscray spectators, Lisa Anderson and Ning Boonprakob, were asked to help out and provide a bench for the sixth game in two days. Geelong came into the final the clear favourites, but the Footscray team played an excellent game and rose to the challenge. At the end of full time it was a nil all draw. At the end of extra time golden goal, it was still a draw! Unfortunately the decision came down to strokes. Geelong managed to put four balls in and Footscray placed...

Women’s Practice Match 2 Results

On a bright Saturday morning the Footscray Pennant A team made the long trip over the Westgate Bridge to play against TEMS Pennant A. The game started at  a slow pace due to the team trying a new playing formation. Slowly the confusion died and the skill of the players came to the surface. TEMS, a team of some very experienced and some young skillful players was always going to be hard. After a mixed up first half, where FHC lead 1-0,  the team came back in the second half to score two exciting field goals, to end the match 3-0 up. The Pennant A squad of 2013 is an exciting, youthful, skillful and extremely positive side. Season 2013 looks very promising. Pennant B played a great game against a very experienced TEMS team. FHC maintained possession for the most part and were able to penetrate the goal circle on a number of occasions  providing opportunities for some good shots but unfortunately were unable to convert them into goals. The defence was great and the defensive corners were sharp, keeping the score at nil all until an untimely departure of  a central player with an injury leaving a team of ten on the pitch. TEMS took full advantage of this resulting in a 1/0 defeat to...

Just Hockey Pre-Season Cup Wrap Up

Following a competition restructure, Victorian Hockey’s top flight has become the Premier League in 2013. And on the eve of the new season, Footscray Hockey Club played host to the Just Hockey Pre-Season Cup over the weekend of 23rd and 24th March. The Pre-Season Cup, now in its 5th year, has both Men’s and Women’s teams battling out for the top prize in both divisions after a rigorous two-day round robin competition. This year the invite only event consisted of seven Premier League Men’s and seven Premier League Women’s teams. The event, initiated and hosted by Footscray Hockey Club, has grown in popularity with the round-robin format over two days favoured by many of the clubs. The tournament allows competing teams to play at least five to six practice matches against fellow Premier League clubs, whilst also having a chance to win the Cup and the prize money on offer. The format also allows each club to field expanded playing squads over the weekend, a good test for competing coaches to see where their squads are at before the season starts. With Footscray Hockey Club also competing in both the Men’s and Women’s Premier League competition this year, the hit out was an opportunity for both to get some game time and experience into young squads. The Footscray Women’s team played 20 different players over the weekend, aiming to expose as...

Women’s Practice Match 1 Results

March 16th marked the first weekend of 3 practice matches scheduled before round 1. Premier League (2) defeated Mentone (1). The Premier League Reserve side played Mentone on Saturday at Footscray in our first practice match against another club. The women played a solid game, performing against Mentone at a level above that played in competition last year. I am very happy with the all women’s effort. We won 1/0, a good start to the practice matches. Thanks team. Reserves (1) defeated Mentone (0). Pennant A played in the Werribee Tournament and were the Runners Up in the Grand Final against Geelong, decided by strokes. Fantastic effort by the PA women, led brilliantly by Lauren Hopkins and Sheridan Corless. To lose in strokes to Geelong (a State League 2 team) was just amazing. Having smashed Werribee SL3 & their seconds 3-1 and 3-0, we went on to storm into the grand final with a resounding 11-1 win over PEGS. Season 2013 looks very promising… Thank you to our wonderful team and a big “Thank you” to Alicia Duggan, Lisa Anderson and Ning Boonprakob. Thank you to all the parents for your support and also well done to Werribee Hockey club for a well organised tournament. Cheers…. Pennant B (1) lost to Mentone PA (3). Pennant B had to step up and play Mentone Pennant A in  cold blustery conditions  as...
