The battle of the west with FHC playing Altona in the fourth showdown. At this point in time it has the doggies two wins and a draw. With most players back this week the FHC team needed a win to give any hope of making the finals. The game started with both teams not making much headway into the game but it was FHC who settled first and scored early and continued to score the next six goals. We converted our only corner and earned a penalty stroke which were all converted. Once again, the team switched off and allowed the opposition to get into the game as everyone wanted to score goals. Two soft goals were let in and Altona had their backs up and were really applying pressure. We had some luck and Altona failed to convert. The second half started like the end with Altona hitting FHC hard but we held strong and and got back into the game and we finally scored and our confidence went through the roof. We scored three more times and finished off 9-2 winners. The coach was very excited with the way the young players played today. Leah Merrett had a very heavy tag, and Megan was rested due to soreness. Sam Ellis gave us good run while being hit hard every time she had the ball. But our young brigade stood up led by Olivia Colasurdo who held center half. Our young strikers who came off to get a rest during the second half where exhausted have now taken the next step in their development, they are now learning the work rate required and the coach could not be more proud of the way they played, short term pain has helped these young players take the next step. Bethany Russ, Hayley McAlinden, Emily Bannan and Monica Singh all ran hard giving  the midfield a chance to feed the ball to them into dangerous spaces. Occasional lapses in team play was evident, but the frequency of this is reducing The future is looking amazing with young players coming through all the time and some PLR players who are knocking on the door.

Premier League Reserves 1 lost Altona 2 Goal P Van Meeuwen

The PLR team had one of those days where things did not go well. The team struggled to connect passes and the tackles made were not strong enough. Some good play was evident from Ellen Druce, Gabby Minet and Georgia Cutrale.

Pennant A 0 lost Essendon 3

Today was a story of missed opportunities. The FHC team had more scoring opportunities and more ‘D’ penetrations than Essendon. Our implementation of the press was excellent. The team won majority of 50/50 balls and every second effort was commendable. Work needs to be done on reducing turnovers, being stronger on the ball and of course scoring goals! The signs are good for the future.

Pennant B 2 def Essendon 0 Goals S Colarsurdo, J Skilton

The Pennant B team rediscovered their mojo this week thanks to the help of Sal Colarsudo, Jamie Skilton, Alicia Duggan, Jemma Caon and Anne-Marie Nylander, welcome additions to the ever diminishing line up for this team. The FHC team gelled and dominated the game from hit off. Good passing and a determined drive resulted in the first goal from Sal Colarsurdo. Essendon applied some pressure and were rewarded with a short corner but no goal was forthcoming thanks some great defence. The central play of Essendon’s game was shut down thanks to some great skill from Giulia Virtuoso. Terrific distribution from all the halves resulted in some force in the forward line and short corners were earned and Jamie Skilton slammed the second goal in from one of these shorts with less than five minutes on the clock sealing a well deserved and much needed win for the PB team keeping the team in the top four.

Metro 1 North 2 def Essendon 0 Goals H McMahon, Ess Own Goal

On Sunday afternoon at FHC, M1N had a solid win over Essendon Ladies. FHC dominated territory for much of the game, but the forward circle was constantly crowded and we did not work hard enough to create movement and space in the 1st half. Things improved in the second half and the team got on the scoreboard. We still left plenty of chances out there. The plan is to get these things sorted before the top of the table clash this Saturday against MCC.
