The ‘Brendan Sheehan Field’ unveiled

The elevation of Brendan Sheehan to field-name status at FHC celebrates a contribution of just over 40 years to the Footscray Hockey Club. Brendan was a talented junior cricketer but not playing winter sport back in the early 1970’s when he came along to watch his younger brother Peter who had started playing U10 hockey at FHC. Within weeks of the seasons start a chap called Alby Speed convinced spectator Brendan to come along and give the senior game a try – and the rest is history! Brendan took quickly to the sport and to FHC. Within a couple of seasons he was coaching junior teams, heading up our school recruiting efforts and after just four or five years was on the FHC Board. On field, Brendan’s cricket skills transferred quickly to our game, and by 1977 he was playing coach of our Men’s first eleven team. In a famous campaign, that 1977 team won three finals, all in extra time, to win our fifth Men’s first eleven premiership. That State League 4 premiership was the equivalent of the fourth highest grade of men’s hockey in Victoria, so you can see that the journey to actual permanent (we’re almost there aren’t we?) Premier League status over the next forty years has been a lifetime’s work for Brendan, Alby, Neil, Leon, RJ, Darryl, Greg and so on. In Brendan’s case...

Life Membership Honour for Darryl Jahnke

At the 83rd Annual General Meeting of the Footscray Hockey Club, current Mens Section Administrator and Club legend Darryl Jahnke was awarded with Life Membership of the club following his efforts on and off the field over many years. Highlights of Darryl’s achievements and roles within the club are below. Administrative Roles: Darryl has 8 years of men’s section admin behind him. Five years as the actual Men’s Section Administrator, and 3 years as an assistant to people like Betts and Tommy G, principally taking care of the ‘Metro’ team concerns (remembering that the ‘Metro’ end of the senior sections were much bigger before re-branding to ‘Pennant’ gradings in more recent years). Team Management: In addition to these administrative roles, Darryl has been the men’s first eleven team manager for 7 or 8 years – the last 5 years in Premier League, and previous stints supporting Steve Jensen and Mark Whinney. Coaching Roles: Darryl has coached the men’s and women’s first elevens (one year each), and been an assistant coach to Steve, Mark and ______ (there was a third person).  Darryl has coached junior teams for FHC for in excess of ten years. Playing: Darryl came through all of the junior age-groups at FHC. In total, he has played in excess of 500 games for our Club. Because we were a SL3 club at the time, Darryl needed to...
