A less successful win/lose ratio for the women’s sides in round 2. Some hard fought games evident giving the teams some determination at training to carry through to round 3 and tip the ratio back towards the wins for FHC.

Premier League 0 lost Essendon 1

FHC Premier League team travelled to Essendon for the round 2 away match. Both teams were fully aware of how important this match was leading into the first double header weekend. First half got underway with both teams moving the ball well but playing safe hockey. FHC finally broke through Essendon’s defence and earned a few corners but were unable to convert, also a penalty stroke which was saved by a diving keeper. The first half ended at nil all. The second half started just like the first with neither teams really finding their feet. Late in the second half Essendon scored off some scrappy play. This kick charged FHC who had numerous chances to score but failed to convert late in the second half.  A missed opportunity but one we can learn from. We introduced another player to the firsts with Gabby ” machinette ” Lewis, and for her first game this year Jess Snaize. A very young team learned a few lessons today and hopefully all will be playing to the potential of the team.

Pennant A 0 lost MCC 4

Pennant B 2 def MCC 1 Goals F Bruce, M Patterson

The FHC Pennant B team played Round 2 facing MCC at the oppositions home ground. The first half saw MCC score a goal off a short corner then despite several attempts FHC could not manage to penetrate on the shorts. Some good short passing and team work resulted in a well deserved equaliser for FHC. The next ten minutes of the first half saw FHC have MCC on the back foot. Some terrific running by Carrol Burt opened many opportunities in the second half. The final winning goal came with minutes to spare after the team finally worked the press with terrific pressure and a 2-1 win resulted for FHC.

Metro 1 North 3 def PHSK 0 Goals Kathleen Joyce, Leone Lang 2

Metro 1 North women played Powerhouse/St Kilda on Saturday. Like last week, the team started a bit slowly, but found the groove and had a solid 3-0 win. The first FHC goal came after about 10 minutes through Kathleen Joyce on the left post – her first goal for the club – and this settled the team down. Right on half time Leone Lang scored from a short corner and the message at half time was “don’t be complacent”. FHC dominated the second half and could have scored a few more. Leona Lang scored again near the end to seal the win. Another very solid game registering the second win from two games. Excellent start!

Metro 1 South 0 lost Southern United 2

Metro 2 North 0 drew MCC 0

Metro 2 South 4 def Waverley 1 Goals Tania Bezzobs, Annabel Cambridge 2, Chloe Ong

FHC dominated the game from the on-set, catching Waverley off guard in the first few minutes, snaring a goal from a well-constructed short corner, followed by a field goal a few minutes later. A further goal from another short corner towards the end of the half saw the half time score at 3-0. Waverley came out fighting in the second half and pegged back one of the goals early on, but FHC quickly regained their balance to produce many outstanding flows of play, one in particular where an accurate 16 yard hit was distributed from player to player all the way down the field and into the back of the net. Several more promising opportunities were left unrewarded, but the teamwork was a treat to watch. The final score 4 -1. Well done again team!
