State League 1 (2) def MCC (0)
The Footscray Hockey Club would like to congratulate Amy Scott on being named player of the match in Saturdays State League 1 clash against MCC at the State Hockey Centre. Amy was an integral part of our backline and well supported with Penny Mather, Lexi White, Georgia Hopkins and Caitlin Duggan shutting up shop and delivering ball to our midfield and strikers all day to help cap off our season with a great win. The best on field medal was part of Hockey Victoria’s Women’s Round, the week long celebration of Women’s Hockey included a Women’s Breakfast and the presentation of various awards angled at the promotion of Women in Sport. Also Nicole Virtuoso took home outstanding Female Club Administrator award for her hard work over the last few years.
You might expect players to slacken off when they have nothing to gain from a win or loss, regardless of the result we would finish fifth in our first year in WSL1. But we had nothing to worry about with some unfinished business for our girls finishing this season off with our last game against MCC. Last year we also finished off the season playing MCC amd with the hockey community watching we wanted to put in a good show to finish the year.
The game got underway with Sam Ellis being heavly tagged by Carla Bond until Sammy shifted to the centre. We moved the ball well but could not get the outcomes in our attacking circle. We needed to lift our work rate. Which we did and with some great line breaking by Leah Merrett, was able to pass the ball to Ellen Druce at the spot for a beautiful goal to give the doggies a 1-0 lead at half time.
The second half got underway with both teams working hard but we had the better chances with Olivia colasurdo playing in the middle and linking up well with Rachel Doody and Sam Ellis. We finally scored again with Ellen Druce deflecting another goal to give us 2-0 nil lead that stayed that way and capped off a great year.
Luke: “very happy with our performance today, the ladies wanted to finish off the year with a good win and have achieved this goal. It has been a great year and very happy with our results all year. First year up and played some good hockey. The challenge will be backing up next year and to continue our development to hold SL1. Very proud of team. A big thank you to my captains Esther and Leah, the senior players for the support, advice, guidance and help with training and game day. Tim Cullen for helping all year and Travis Brooks to helping with a few sessions and to bounce a few ideas off. A few weeks off and we plan what will happen over the summer and next year.”
Well done ladies, go Footscray.

3 goal-line saves, 1 stroke and we should’ve had a second, any other day it would have gone our way. Let’s hope the ball behaves itself in our final against Essendon.

This game showed what a real team effort from start to finish can achieve. Everyone played well. To be promoted last year to PD and then to finish 2nd on the ladder is quite an achievement. The team goes into finals with heads held high and full of confidence.

Our final game for the year at home on Saturday afternoon. ECHO were sitting second, but we had beaten them at their home ground earlier in the year, so were quietly confident. They got out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, but at the start of the second half we came back hard, scoring from a penalty corner and dominating play. We had a goal disallowed (?), then they got a late goal on a breakaway as we kept pushing for the equaliser. Disappointing to lose, but as with almost all games this season, the effort was excellent but our conversion was ordinary. Thanks to all the players for being involved this year, for being positive and happy to travel. Make sure you show your colors for the other teams in the next few weeks.

We finished the season with an emphatic win over Latrobe 2. Foots won 7-1. Footscray had most of the play, working it down the field in teams. It was not an easy win as Latrobe had skill and speed and were able to make attempts at scoring. The goals were scored by Geraldine Karla 2, Michelle Uulf 2 and 1 apiece to Remeill Chambers, Trudy Chambers, and Rebecca Holland.
